We are sometimes joined by a member of anothor club on our club runs. He rides with headphones on, shoots up and down the group like he's trying to race someone. Does not seem to be able to ride in a straight line. Generally puts all the other riders on edge when he is near them. What can be done? If I am leading a ride and he turns up I will tell him he is not welcome. I have tried to point out the error of his ways, but he becomes very aggresive.

Should we ban him from all our club rides?

Yes we in the North Road know who you mean. He rides with us on Saturday's and I guess he goes with you on Sundays.

He has been warned many times but he is very stubborn and becomes aggressive when you point out his mistakes. It is always someone else's fault. Last winter he took down George and Mike Olive.

He also rides with no pump and tubes and when he punctures we have some soft hearted club members who actually help him.

We could ban him from the club if he doesn't get his act together though that won't stop him coming out. Maybe he should join Blue Sky?

Have you tried asking him to respect other safety, and not ride with headphones?

Who is it? - come on name names!!! - Does he race - or is it only on sunday's

If not, try out some strategies:
1) Change your meeting place
2) Announce a p1ss stop - when he's dismounted and in full flow, you all ride off
3) Tell him you're meeting later from next week onwards - or a different meet point.
4) Spike his bottles
5) Get him to sit on the front all day
6) Accidently push him in the hedge
7) go really slowly so he get's cheesed off

He attempted racing this year. Got shelled out the back in the Whitewebbs RR at Whitwell and then went off course (How I don't know. probably ignored the marshalls!!!!). Keen but doesn't seem to have a clue about group riding and doesn't seem to want to take advice.

When he's on your wheel aim at all the potholes you can find and jump them at the last moment.

..I would let him continue on the bases that he listens to you etc. If not then in a polite way inform that rider that his company is no longer welcome.

If that rider has a problem then there is no other alternative but to stick 'em in the ditch especially on a nice windy day going hard into a cross-wind !!

From what I heard, missing a marshal at the Whitewebbs wasn't hard. They were probably all off counting the money...

All very good ideas but in reality I don't think they will work on him
Hes just got to be given a serious warning or hes out

dongiovanni@corleone.org ........ but don't tell him I sent ya

seriously though folks; Mick Quinn went out with the Herts Wheelers on Sunday and came back with his hair standing on end. Apparently our man put the fear of god into Mick (and others), with his stop-start riding style and sudden deviations in direction, when riding 2 abreast on traffic free roads :!: Get the impression there's a little bit of a fantasy going on here, with him imagining he's powering off the front and having to ease up cos' we cant match him  How about the rather unlovely trick of letting him get 100yds off the front and then taking an unscheduled left and putting the hammer down for the next 5 miles :?:

True, but then there were signs out, I think, unless the Whitewebbs were saving even more money. :!: :!:

I am not sure who have voted to let him continue riding. Let me tell you his best move, you obviously haven't experienced it. He powers off the front then stops at the side of the road. When the group gets close, almost as they get to him he starts off slowly at a 45 degree angle from the edge of the road, forcing the group either to swerve or brake. He's 4kin nuts. Yet I don't think he is aware of what he is doing, even more dangerous.

And just to give the scenario a piquant twist  ; when tackled on the headphone issue last week, his response was that he didn't have any music playing for the entire ride  :!: It's a worry isn't it :?:

I've tried to do this in the past but there are some club members who are too soft and won't allow it.

Anyway no matter what happens he doesn't get put off and turns up the next week.

We had a very successful open clubrun at my first club in Croydon. The open nature meant that people like me could turn up and make new friends while having a decent ride. All abilities were catered for in that the strong riders were quite happy to take it easy for a few miles after a big hill and the straglers were thus honour bound to catch up. We even waited and regrouped on re-entering the city for mutual safety reasons. This kind of group dynamic was dependent on regular attendence of a minimum of what you could call the 'patrons' of the run. In the early days, once I turned up and no such patrons were there, only me and another newnbie. The run didn't really take shape and we got lost to be honest.

I am boring you with all of this, as we used various tactics to defend against dangerous riders who frequently appeared on the scene, but few became a nuisance. Basically, we used race tactics to get the massage accross. Eg. a stonger rider encourages them to break with them on an uphill bit, then promptly lets him go and returns to the bunch. These people rarely have the legs to go with their outrageous style, and there's nothing like a shameful return to the back of an unwelcoming bunch to knock an ego down to size. If there are indeed soft touches who prevent tactical taming of the crazy Italian, warn them that they are with you or against you and advise they aid the cohesion of your clubrun. Keep it alive.

The trouble is he'll just wait for the group to catch up, start off diagonally across the road, disrupt the bunch, and then it's back to square one.

Well that's unanimous ban him. He can go on a chain gang with the 3 people who's votes didn't count.

He was out with us again on Saturday....... hesitate to say this, but he was much better behaved.... suspect he might have seen his name/bad rep in lights (i.e. on here) :D

Was he out with the Herts Wheelers again on Sunday :?:

Don't know I am too scared to go out on them now just in case he's there. I 've decided I'll be safer at Hillingdon.

I was at the clubroom tonight apparently one of my club mates printed this out and gave it to him Sunday when he came on our clubrun. He didn't like it but it brought home that he needs to consider his riding style. It was said he rode well on the clubrun. So all in all this topic may have had a positive influence on him. Fingers crossed.
